We love finding free stuff...and when we find free stuff that's really great, it's time to celebrate! Here's a listing of our favourites!
Open Office. This is a free office suite that has a very similar feel to Microsoft Office 2000. It's a very capable suite including a Word Processor, Database, Spreadsheet and Presentation software. The programs are quite compatible with MS Office. We ran a test with one of us using Open Office and the other MS Office 2000, mostly for word processing. We ran into very few compatability problems. The ones we did were on relatively obscure things like page borders and watermarks. If you're looking for a full featured Office suite, then definitely check out Open Office.
Joomla! We build a lot of our websites with the Joomla! content management system. It's very widely used and very well supported by an active user and development community. Not for the amateur "do it in a night" web designer, but for serious projects, this brings serious horse-power to the table.
Sugar CRM. This is an extremely powerful web-based Open Source Customer Relationship Management system, rivalling the best of them out there. It's "community edition" comes free and there are reasonably priced commercial flavors available too. You'll need a server (Linux is probably the preferred choice for this one) so you'll need some IT infrastructure to set it up. We're currently investigating switching to Sugar CRM from GoldMine.
Born Rich, by Bob Proctor. I've read this book at least 6 times, and given away at least that many copies. The book is a practical manual, not a treatise on theories.
