THE STORY BEHIND THE "PIGGYBANK"

We were driving through Thornbury when my son Tyler (6 at the time) shouted: "Hey Dad, it’s a great big Piggybank!" I looked around trying to find some great big piggybank and saw nothing. After following his pointing finger, I saw what he was talking about…He saw someone putting money into a do-it-yourself carwash. He was right! That was somebody’s piggybank.

The really brilliant part was when my son then said, "hey…you make Piggybanks!". He was referring to what "mom and dad" did for a living; at the time, we built and ran our own web businesses from home: websites that people put money into! That’s when the light bulb went on in our head and the phrase "Piggybank Website" was coined.

MARKETING ON THE INTERNET SINCE ‘93

Both Jen and Scott are business graduates from Wilfrid Laurier University which explains their "business first, technology second" approach to websites. The Internet was just starting to happen in the early 90’s (back when only the really cool people had an email address on their business card) and they saw the immense potential for marketing with the Internet.

They launched their first Email newsletter called Achieve in 1993. Thinking back to those times, Scott says: "I remember the painful pioneering work to send personalized emails merged from my Maximizer contact manager…it was bleeding edge, but very powerful". Now, it’s routine.

A SMALL BUSINESS PASSION

"I’ve spent my time flying around North America consulting with Fortune 500 companies; the glamour wears off pretty quickly" says Scott when talking about making the decision to focus on Small Business. "Being able to roll up our sleeves and work along side the small business owner is far more gratifying…we can have more impact and can relate much better" says Scott.

Piggybank Technology focuses on bringing the capabilities of "big business" down to the "little guy", helping small businesses compete much more effectively. "When we do a project", says Scott, "we like to think of ourselves as being on the Clients’ team as their Manager of Marketing Technology."

WEBSITES THAT GO KA-CHING!

Over the years, Scott and Jen have been developing ways to weave the response pulling power of Direct Response Marketing with the Internet to create effective marketing websites…"Websites that Go Ka-Ching!"

"Before we created websites for other people, we were running our own web-based businesses to put food on the family table and we learned very quickly that our web marketing better work!" says Scott, who remembers how they quickly cut through the hype of Internet Marketing to find the approaches that actually work.

WORKING TOGETHER, TEAM STYLE

The world of technology and Web Design moves fast. To keep up with it, Piggybank Technology has embraced online collaboration tools that allow us to put together the right mix of team members for each project. Our virtual team can handle sites that range from small to highly custom. This flexible, low-overhead approach has been fundamental to Piggybank’s consistent year-over-year growth.

PAYING IT FORWARD

Website GiveawayRemembering back to their start-up days, Scott and Jen remember those boot strapping days of starting out with little more than an idea. "Paying our success forward to help others is at the core of who Piggybank is". In 2009, when the news was full of economic doom and gloom, they launched the "Piggybank Website Giveaway" and gave 3 websites to start-up businesses. Scott and Jen continue to quietly find people and organizations to help with free or deeply discounted sites. In addition, they are proud sponsors and supporters of the Self Employment Assistance (SEA) program, mentors with the WINGS & HEROS network and regular contributors to community causes.

"We are truly blessed to be living in such a great city as Barrie with beautiful scenery, growing opportunity and a warm community", explains Scott.
